GOOD SHOW: PSPB’s Poulomi Ghatak played brilliantly to make it to the women’s singles final on Monday. GUWAHATI: PSPB’s Poulomi Ghatak played three brilliant matches to make it to the women’s singles final of the 71st senior National and inter-State table tennis here on Monday. She will take on defending champion Shamini Kumaresan, who was equally outstanding in her passage through the knockout stages. In the semifinals, five-time champion Poulomi ended the hopes of her colleague and second-seeded Madhurika Patkar, while fourth seeded Shamini stopped young Soumi Mondal, who had upset top-seeded Divya Deshpande in the pre-quarterfinals. In the men’s semifinals, seventh-seeded Sourav Chakraborty outlasted his fourth-seeded PSPB colleague Anthony Amalraj to set up a summit clash with defending champion Achanta Sharath Kamal. Sharath made short work of his Petroleum colleague and former champion Subhajit Saha. Soumi and Pallavi excelThe hierarchy in both the men’s and women’s singles was rattled on a day which saw three important rounds beginning with the pre-quarterfinals. The greater number of upsets came in the women’s section with remarkable performances from Soumi, Pallavi Kundu and Poulomi. Soumi ended the run of India No. 1 Divya with a fine show of control and aggression. Following Soumi’s good show, Pallavi ousted defending inter-institutional champion and third-seeded Pooja Sahasrabudhe while unseeded Poulomi beat sixth seeded Mamta Prabhu. In the quarterfinals, Soumi got the better of four-time champion and her senior State-mate Mouma Das, Poulomi ended the run of Pallavi and Shamini thrashed Neha Agarwal. The best show came from second seeded Madhurika Patkar, who erased a 0-3 deficit to make a brilliant comeback against Petroleum colleague Ankita Das. PSPB seeds exitIn the men’s section, though top-seeded Achanta Sharath Kamal of PSPB continued to run through the line-up of his opponents with easy wins in the top half, his colleagues coming next to him in the seedings — second seed Zubin Kumar and third seed Soumyadip Roy — ran into rough weather in the quarterfinals. In a battle of the southpaws, Zubin lost to his unseeded colleague Sourav Chakraborty, who attacked brilliantly to see the end of his superior seeded colleague. Soumyadip surrendered a 2-0 lead at one stage before going down to a late charge from his colleague, the sixth-seeded Anthony Amalraj. Earlier in the pre-quarterfinals, eighth seeded Sanil Shetty and fourth seeded Anirban Nandy lost to Arpit Bhopalkar and two-time champion Subhajit Saha respectively.
