Thiruvananthapuram: The 24th national meet of the National Federation of Insurance Field Workers of India (NFIFWI), the association of the Development Officers of the Life Insurance Corporation of India, will be held St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Pattom, on February 20 and 21. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the meeting and Forest Minister Benoy Viswom will deliver the keynote address. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, office-bearers of NFIFWI said that over 4,000 delegates from across the country would take part in the meeting. As the only organisation representing the 25,000-strong workforce of development officers in LIC, NFIFWI was quite concerned about several provisions in the Insurance Bill and the LIC Bill, which would adversely affect the public sector giant. The Centre's move to withdraw the government guarantee on LIC's insurance policies and the attempts to cut down the bonus offered to policy holders would only help the private sector insurance companies, they said. The Swaroop Committee's recommendation to stop the commissions given to insurance agents could be detrimental to the insurance sector, they added. The federation would organise a mass run from the Martyr's Column at Palayam to LIC office at Pattom, as part of the national meet, with the message ‘Strengthen LIC, protect public sector.'
