PATHANAMTHITTA: The Licensed Engineers and Supervisors Federation (Lensfed) has termed the amendments to the Kerala Municipal Building Rules “unscientific.” In a statement here on Wednesday, Federation vice-president Nandakumar Varma said many provisions in the amended rules were illogical, causing unnecessary problems to the common man. He said Lensfed would launch a State-wide agitation seeking withdrawal of the controversial portions in the rules. The Federation will stage a dharna in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam on Thursday in protest against the amendments. Joseph M. Puthusserry, MLA, will inaugurate the dharna in Pathanamthitta district, in front of the municipal office in Thiruvalla. Municipal chairman Cherian Polachirackal; R.K. Manisankar, Lensfed president; and Joseph Mathew, district president; will address the dharna. He said the new rules would not permit a good number of families to dig wells on their 4 to 10 cents of land. As per the amended rules, they would have to secure the permission of their neighbours to dig a well on their residential premises. Mr. Varma said though the authorities claimed that the rules had been amended to make them similar to those prevailing in other States, they had failed to take into consideration the shortage of vacant land in the State. He also demanded withdrawal of the increase in the building permit fee of up to three times that of the current rate.
