Two arrested for death of workers in sand quarry

CHIKBALLAPUR: The Gauribidanur Rural police on Thursday arrested two people, one of them a local Congress leader, in connection with the death of two workers at an illegal sand quarry at Halaganahalli on Monday.
The police gave the names of the arrested as Shakuntala Bai and Babu Reddy.
Shakuntala Bai had leased her agricultural land to Babu Reddy, a Congress leader, for sand extraction. The police had registered a case of negligence leading to death under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code.
Two workers, Maddurappa (30) and Ramanjini (35), were buried alive when the earth caved in while they were digging sand at a depth of 40 feet.
Meanwhile, the Gauribidanur Police have seized 12 lorries that were illegally transporting sand.
