Police suspect the role of someone known to the victim

Victim’s throat slit with a sharp-edged weapon

Money, property papers found intact

NEW DELHI: A 65-year-old woman was found murdered under mysterious circumstances at her residence in Geeta Colony here on Thursday. The police suspect the role of someone known to the victim in the gruesome murder.

Nirmal Arora lived with her 70-year-old husband Somnath Arora on the first floor of a three-storey building. The ground and second floors of the building are locked.

Mr. Arora, a retired Air Force officer, presently oversees accounts-related works in a private firm. Around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday he left for office leaving his wife alone in the house. Their domestic help Shanti came around noon and found the door to the house ajar. The television was switched on at a high volume.

When Shanti went inside, she found Ms. Arora’s body lying on the bed with stab wounds. She immediately alerted a neighbour who called up the police. Subsequently Mr. Arora and his daughters, three of whom live in the Capital and one in Chandigarh, were informed of the murder.

The police found Ms. Arora’s legs tied up with a metal wire and her throat slit with a sharp-edged weapon.

Though Ms. Arora’s chain was missing, other ornaments she was wearing were intact.

There was no major ransacking of the house and the assailants had only searched a cupboard.

Preliminary investigations revealed that entry to the house was friendly, suggesting the involvement of someone known to Ms. Arora. Enquiries by the police revealed that she seldom opened door to strangers. On Thursday she had talked to one of her daughters, Parita, living in Rohini around 10:45 a.m.

Mr. Arora purportedly told the police that apart from Ms. Arora’s chain, around Rs.15,000 that he had recently withdrawn for some work were missing from the house. However, Rs.50,000 and other important documents including property papers were found intact.

The police have registered a case and are investigating all possible angles, including robbery as a motive for the murder.
