22 taluks facing severe water scarcity in State

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: It is time people realised the importance of judicious use of water and join hands in saving every drop of it, said C.M. Shirol, Regional Commissioner, Belgaum Revenue division. He was addressing a seminar on “Hydro-fracturing rainwater harvesting and other technologies for enhancing yield of groundwater structures” organised under the auspices of the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), South Western Region, Bangalore, here on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Davangere K. Amarnarayan, Additional Director of Mines and Geology H.M. Khayum Ali, CGWB official T.M. Hunse and CGWA scientist K.M. Vishwanath were present.

Drawing attention to the severe water scarcity conditions affecting at least 839 taluks, including 22 in Karnataka, he said that 20 water sources have been affected in varying degrees. Such a situation calls for immediate action to rejuvenate these sources of water on the one hand and conservation of available water on the other.

He said that water was now a matter of international significance with United Nations Organisation declaring the 2005-2015 decade as “Water for Life”.

Therefore, it was every individual’s responsibility to conserve every drop of water before it was too late, he cautioned.
