A first in foot over-bridges for the Capital

NEW DELHI: For the first time in the Capital, three foot over-bridges would be constructed on the U.P. Link Road near Mayur Vihar using a tubular steel frame and toughened polycarbonate glass sheets.

Announcing this on Friday, Delhi Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the three over-bridges would be constructed as part of the Rs.334-crore U.P. Link Road project and completed by June this year. He said two glass escalators, with a capacity for 13 passengers each, would also be provided in each of these structures.

Mr. Chauhan, who inspected the road project along with senior PWD officials, said the project close to the Commonwealth Games Village was taken up to make this road signal-free ahead of the event.

He said about 50 per cent of the work on the corridor improvement project from the National Highway-24 crossing to Chilla Regulator has already been completed and people would start deriving benefit from the project when the 700-metre-long three-lane single carriageway flyover at Mayur Vihar opens in mid-April.

As for the other projects, Mr. Chauhan said they would all be completed by June-end. Though there was a delay in acquisition of land as about 11 bighas of land on the bank of the Yamuna fell in U.P. and the State Government was not willing to part with it, the matter was resolved with the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor acquiring it under emergency clauses and thereafter the work gathered steam.

The Minister said that under the project widening of about 3.6 km of road and its beautification was taking place.

The provision of a bicycle track, service road and footpaths has also been made along the road.

Apart from the flyover at Mayur Vihar, the Minister said a 1,170-metre six-lane flyover is also under construction for covering the two junctions at Samachar Apartments and DND flyover.
