Corporate social responsibility should be made mandatory, says Vice-Chancellor

Two-day national seminar on CSR begins at GITAM University

VISAKHAPATNAM: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) should be made mandatory for a company, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University (Srikakulam) S.V. Sudhakar said while inaugurating a two-day national seminar on CSR at GITAM University here on Friday.

Out of the seven lakh Indian registered companies only a few initiated CSR activities, Prof. Sudhakar noted and wanted the corporate bodies to maintain a network to give a meaningful face to their CSR activities and concentrate more on rural and tribal areas to uplift the illiterates.

The meet is being jointly organised by GITAM University’s GITAM Institute of Management (GIM) and Dr. Ambedkar University. Around 50 major corporate houses are participating in the seminar. GITAM University Vice-Chancellor G. Subramanyam said that industrialisation and urbanisation created new social problems in India. Besides the rehabilitation packages peoples needed a healthy environment, education and eco-friendly technologies. Reducing carbon emissions, improving transparency in business and labour relations would be top CSR issues for companies in future.

HSBC city Manager Ganesh Sharma briefed about their CSR activities and said that they were encouraging low carbon economy.

The concept of CSR meant that enterprises should strive to achieve the balance between socio-economic, environmental concerns and financial factors, GIM Principal K. Siva Rama Krishna said.

Seminar convener Ms. K.V. Uma Devi briefed about the aim of the seminar.
