The sub-inspector was attacked while he was on duty
All accused charged with attempt to murder
NEW DELHI: Eight men who allegedly knocked down a police sub-inspector and ran their car over him on being stopped at a check-point in Greater Noida have been arrested by the police. The sub-inspector is battling for life in hospital.
It all happened on Wednesday evening when six young men from Faridabad in Haryana landed at Ladpura village to attend a wedding ceremony. A police patrol team spotted them allegedly creating a nuisance in an inebriated state a few kilometres away from the local police station. All six were taken to the Kasna police station. They were identified as Praveen, Sanjeev, Kapil, Budhram, Pramod and Yogesh.
A couple of hours later two of their relatives, Virender and Sanjay, came over and pleaded with the police to set them free as they had to attend the wedding. The six were released on bail.
While the six accused and their two relatives were on their way back in three cars, they were stopped by a police team carrying out routine vehicle check in the area and asked to produce registration papers of the cars.
“At this the young men suddenly got angry and accused the police of harassing them. An altercation broke out and the men knocked down Sub-Inspector John Peter with their car and ran over him,” said Station House Officer (Kasna) Inspector D.K. Waliyan.
The sub-inspector is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Kailash Hospital with fractures in his legs and arms. His condition is said to be critical. According to Inspector Waliyan, the men on being stopped at the check-post told the police team that they were coming from a police station.
“It was only later that we got to know that they were the same persons who were earlier booked for creating public nuisance and later released on bail,” he added.
All eight have been arrested and charged with attempt to murder. Six of them, who were arrested earlier for creating a nuisance, are school dropouts, the police said.
The sub-inspector’s family reached Noida from Uttarakhand after they were informed of the incident.
