NEW DELHI: Nurses at the National Heart Institute in East of Kailash here have gone on strike after two of their colleagues were allegedly detained and an attempt made to take their resignation forcibly. The Nurses’ Welfare Association has submitted a letter to the National Human Rights Commission complaining of “violation of human rights.” “Two nurses of the super speciality hospital were locked inside a hospital room in an attempt to obtain their resignation forcibly. They were asking for better salary and working conditions. The incident took place on January 17 and again on February 17,” said Nurses Welfare Association president Usha Krishna Kumar. “On January 23 the entire nursing staff of the hospital submitted a letter to the management listing their demands including salary revision and scrapping of the bond system. There has been no salary hike in the past three years even though the cost of living has gone up and so has the revenue generated by the hospital.” The nurses here are demanding that strict action be taken against the management for human rights violation including detaining employees illegally, denying personal freedom, holding educational certificates illegally and victimising employees for joining the association and demanding better working condition.
