‘Plan to take team to Delhi will serve no purpose’

JD(S) to strongly oppose anti-cow slaughter Bill

For awareness: H.D. Deve Gowda at the farmers’ convention in Chitradurga on Saturday.

Chitradurga: The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has said that farmers will be severely affected if the Union Government decontrols the prices of fertilizers. “Farmers are already distressed over the high prices of fertilizers and other input costs. The Government’s decision will rub salt into their wounds,” he said.

Addressing presspersons after participating in a farmers’ awareness convention here on Saturday, Mr. Gowda urged the Union Government to desist from taking steps that could harm farmers.

To Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s plans to take an all-party delegation to New Delhi if the Centre went ahead with its decision, Mr. Gowda said it would only be a waste of time and nothing would come of it. “Mr. Yeddyurappa will achieve nothing except for spending money on air tickets and hotels. The proposal should be discussed in Parliament, and parties supporting the cause of farmers should pressure the Government to rescind its decision,” he said.

To a question on the BJP Government’s plan to effect a blanket ban on cow slaughter, the Janata Dal (Secular) chief reiterated that his party would oppose it tooth and nail. When reminded that the BJP had a majority in both Houses of the legislature, Mr. Gowda said passing the Bill would not be that easy as it would have to be cleared by the Governor.

Responding to the statement of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R.V. Deshpande that an open discussion should be held on the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project, Mr. Gowda said he was willing to participate in it.
