Special 5 per cent quota in education and jobs sought Residential schools for promotion of education demanded
Cordial welcome: Minister Mopidevi Venkatramana receiving Pondicherry Minister for Revenue Malladi Krishna Rao at the State convention of Agnikula Kshatriyas in Tirupati on Sunday. TIRUPATI: The State-level convention of the Agnikula (Vanne) Kshathriyas Welfare Association on Sunday called upon the government to provide the ‘Most Backward Class’ (MBC) tag to the community which, the leaders charged, remained suppressed and oppressed socio-economically for generations. Besides an animated discussion on the demand and a range of other issues confronting the community as a whole, the State convention also adopted a specific resolution making the twin demand — one for the conferment of the MBC status on the community by tagging it on to the list of BC (A) category and providing a special 5 per cent quota in education and jobs, as is already being implemented by the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry governments. The convention noted that the demand for recognition of the community, as a ‘Most Backward Class’ community and was only a ‘stop gap’ one, pending the conferment of Scheduled Tribe status to it, as is being originally demanded by its leaders over the years. Minister for Court, Law, Technical Education, Mopidevi Venkatramana and the Pondicherry Minister for Revenue, Excise, Tourism, Fisheries etc, Malladi Krishna Rao who were among the senior ‘Agnikula Kshathriya’ leaders who participated in the convention also strongly pitched in for the BC tag and quota to ensure the socio-economic and political uplift of the community. Other demandsAmong the other demands voiced by the convention are: conferment of ownership right on the lands being tilled by farmers of the community and also to the fisherfolk belonging to the caste, extending them ‘Pavala Vaddi’ scheme, starting of residential schools for the caste to help their wards come up in the field of education. Important among the leaders who participated were B. Indira and B. Narayana Rao — both MLCs, P. Satishkumar, MLA; Barri Prasad, State president; Teppala Santharam, general secretary, C.R. Rajan, Treasurer and Dr. C. Subramanyam, vice-president.
