CHENNAI: Defending champion Nethaji SC's woes continued as it hurtled to its second successive defeat in the St. Joseph's-Chennai Football Association senior division league at the SDAT-Nehru Stadium here on Monday. An enterprising Southern Railway displayed robustness if not flair in adequate measure to script its maiden victory (5-0) in the championship. With hardly five minutes into the first half, Elamurugan, playing in his first season for Railway, struck when he perfectly timed his header home off a flag kick from M. Bharath. Railway continued to make deep inroads into Nethaji's territory, and it could have added more to its tally had it not been poor finishing. M. Bharath (30th min) scored off a penalty after Udayashankar brazenly pulled down Elamurugan. Going into the break with a cushion of two goals, Railway looked hungry for more in the second half. Its forwards moved in right earnest and Elamurugan (53rd), easily the star of the day, unleashed a stinging right footer, which goalkeeper Nandakumar tried hard to save. But the shot touched his right hand and sailed into the net. Nethaji's rough play came to the fore as Udayashankar brought down Tamizhmani to get his second yellow card and was given the marching orders. G. Venkatesan completed the agony for Nethaji with a brace in the dying minutes of the match. Perambur Blues beats Universal Earlier in a first division contest, Perambur Blues edged out Universal Club 2-1. P. Jiju and P. Rathinam scored for Perambur while S. Charles slotted in the lone goal for Universal. — Principal Correspondent
