FREE AGAIN: A tigress wearing a radio collar wades through the river after being released by forest workers (right) in Storekhali forest in the Sunderbans, 130 km south of Kolkata, on Wednesday. The tigress had been caught close to human habitation nearby a few days ago. Conservation group WWF-India has enlisted the support of sports stars and celebrities to raise awareness of the threat of tiger extinction, citing government estimates that there are just over 1,400 tigers left in the wild.
Corrections and Clarifications
A report and pictures that caused a bit of confusion. On February 23,
2010, a report "Man wakes up next to tigress" had a combo-picture of the
tigress being taken in a cage, for observation to Songaon village, south of
Kolkata. On February 25, 2010, a standalone AFP combo-picture, titled "Back
to the wild", showed a tigress "wearing a radio collar, being released by
forest workers from a boat in the Storekhali forest in the Sunderbans". On
March 2, 2010, there was another standalone picture (PTI), titled "Back to
its habitat", which showed a tigress "fitted with a radio-collar, being
released [from a boat] at the Pirkhali forest block in the Sunderbans". A
few readers wanted a clarification on whether the picture was a repeat as
the animals were released from a boat, had radio collars and were tigresses.
In response to a request for a clarification, Mr. Pradeep Vyas, Director,
Sunderban Biosphere Reserve, says that these are two different animals. The
animal in the February 25 picture was the tigress mentioned in the February
23 report. Back to the wild.
