Discussions on installation of radar at airport make headway

A Correspondent

Nedumbassery: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Thursday held discussions with the officials of the Cochin International Airport Limited on various issues including the scope of installing a radar at the Cochin airport.

A senior airport official confirmed that S.C. Chhatwal, the Finance Director on the board of AAI, visited the airport and held discussions on issues ranging from the installation of radar to the future expansion projects. He, however, denied the reports of both the parties signing an MoU on the revenue sharing model.

Core issue

“We discussed and agreed upon a service sharing agreement, but the core issue of discussion was the installation of radar and the AAI has agreed to expedite its installation procedure,” he said. The AAI official also conducted a site inspection to the area allotted for establishing the equipment, he added.

However, according to the official sources, the two agencies are yet to arrive at a settlement on all the other outstanding issues between them including the sharing of revenue and charges on infrastructure.

Presently, aircraft navigation at the Cochin airport is regulated with the Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range system and the installation of radar is expected to improve the precision of aircraft movements.

CIAL is already in consultation with a number of international airlines including the German flag carrier Lufthansa to commence their services to here.
