Toll charge exemption sought
Special Correspondent
NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal-based State Lorry Owners’ Federation – Tamil Nadu has urged the Minister of Road and Surface Transport Kamal Nath to exempt goods carriers from paying toll charges with immediate effect.
In a memorandum to the Minister, the association president K. Nallathambi pointed out that lorry operators had been paying cess on diesel for road maintenance in advance. But ‘goondas’ were employed to collect toll charges, which he said was unfair. Hence, the ministry should immediately withdraw the charges.
He also insisted that the government should withdraw the stipulations that insisted on qualification for drivers. As drivers were becoming scarce, such stringent rules would jeopardize lorry movement.
He said that driver training schools should be opened in all district headquarters.
Mr. Nallathambi asked the government to allow operators to import tyres.
