Leprosy eradication rally flagged off

KRISHNAGIRI: Leprosy is a curable disease and students should create awareness among the people about the myth that it is not curable, said Collector P. Amutha here recently. Flagging off an awareness rally at the Tyagi Subramania Siva Government Higher Secondary School at Papparapatti, she said the 0.70 per 10,000 people in the district were affected by leprosy and a treatment for the diseases was given at a hospital in Kaveripattinam in 1988.

World Leprosy Eradication Day was being observed every year on Mahatma Gandhi’s Memorial Day. To mark the day, awareness rallies and quiz progammes were conducted for the school children all over the district, Ms. Amutha said.

Apart from this, awareness camps were held NGOs, women self-help groups, peoples’ representatives at all levels and hospital employees in the district, she added.

Later, she presided over a function and distributed prizes to the students who had participated in the quiz programme.

She also administered the pledge to the participants. Students from various schools, government employees, employees involved in the leprosy eradication programmes participated in the function.
