Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The State government has proposed to construct 25 lakh concrete houses for the poor and downtrodden over a period of six years. Of these, 2.8 lakh houses will be built in Villupuram district, according to Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy.

He was speaking at a function organised at Kaanai near here to distribute free colour television sets.

Mr. Ponmudy said that initially the government had sanctioned Rs. 1,800 crore for the construction of five lakh concrete houses. The Centre had hailed Villupuram as one of the districts which had successfully implemented the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. It had also given a certificate of appreciation considering the district’s performance.

Mr. Ponmudy said that free television sets were being distributed in a phased manner without any discrimination. He gave away 5,337 TV sets to beneficiaries from Kedar, Mambalapattu, C.Meyyur and T.Pudupalayam.

Collector R. Palanisamy was present.
