Lightning arc, geocashing and more on IISc. Open Day

SCIENCE CITY: Bangaloreans packed the Indian Institute of Science Open Day to mark National Science Day as well as the end of the centennial year of the institution.

Bangalore: When the lights dimmed at the massive High Voltage Laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), the visiting school children hushed each other for a spectacle they knew would last no more than a microsecond.

In a thrilling, but blink-and-you-miss-it experiment, a powerful lightning arc was simulated with the help of an impulse current generator, to the audible awe (and some trepidation) of the children. These and other experiments — some dramatic, others easy to do at home — kept the hundreds of visitors to IISc. entertained and happily unmindful of the blazing sun on Open Day on Friday.

It has been over a decade since the premier institute last opened its gates to the public.

Open Day was last held in 1997. The event marks the National Science Day as well as the end of the centennial year of the institute.

IISc. thronged with students and science enthusiasts who made their way around the sprawling campus, map in hand, hunting for the department that promised the most exhilarating live science demos.

Geocashing

At the other end of the campus, at the Centre for Earth Sciences, students went “geocashing”, i.e., using a GPS device to treasure hunt. And some others got into the shoes of a chemist “for five minutes” where they magically blew up a balloon using baking soda and vinegar at the Department of Organic and Physical Chemistry.

Lectures on popular science were being simultaneously held at the faculty hall while nearby an exhibition on IISc.’s 100-year history pulled in the crowds.
