27 dyeing units get closure orders
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on Friday ordered the closure of 27 dyeing units having Individual Effluent Treatment Plants, here, for not complying with the zero liquid discharge norms stipulated by the Madras High Court.
Power disconnected
TNPCB District Environmental Engineer R. Kannan told The Hindu that the power supply to these units had been disconnected under Section 33 A of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
He said embedding of zero liquid discharge system had become mandatory for individual effluent treatment plants and common effluent treatment plants set up by the dyeing units following an order of the Madras High Court which stipulated that either treated or untreated effluent should not be discharged into water bodies like River Noyyal.
“Prior to the order, only effluents having total dissolved solids levels exceeding 2,100 ppm (parts per million) were barred from being discharged into River Noyyal,” Mr Kannan pointed out.
