Photo exhibition on ancient inscriptions begins

TAMBARAM: A two-day photo exhibition on ancient inscriptions from all over India began at the Pallavaram Municipal Primary School on Friday.

The Cultural Awareness Epigraphy Photo Exhibition is being organised by the Archaeological Survey of India, Epigraphy Branch, Chennai Division in connection with the birth centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister C.N.Annadurai. It was inaugurated by Pallavaram Municipal Chairman E.Karunanidhi.

The Assistant Superintending Epigraphist, ASI, Chennai, K.Karuppiah, said 62 photographs of rare and ancient inscriptions from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other States were on display.

The photographs were of some important inscriptions, including those in Brahmi script and in Prakrit and Tamil languages. A photograph of the earliest inscription found in Tamil Nadu – that of Pandian Nedunchezhian found in Madurai in 5th century AD, another of Veera Rajendra Cholan dating back to 12th century AD and found in Tirumukkoodal near Wallajahbad in Kancheepuram district, which spoke about cure for several ailments, including heart attack, are on display.

Mr. Karuppiah said the response to the exhibition, which was held recently in Puducherry, Thanjavur and Vellore, was overwhelming and it was clear that a large section among the people, especially students, were eager to know about inscriptions. P.Rani, Kancheepuram District Elementary Education Officer, spoke.
