In Development mode: The roads leading to the Dattatreya temple at Deval Ganagapur in Afzalpur taluk will be concreted.

DEVAL GANAGAPUR: Deval Ganagapur in Afzalpur taluk of Gulbarga district, where the famous temple of lord Dattatreya is situated, will soon have wider and cleaner roads.

The authorities concerned took up a drive recently to clear encroachments in the town which is frequented by pilgrims from States such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Gujarat.

During the drive taken up between February 23 and 25, illegal structures that had encroached upon roads leading to the temple and the road leading to the sangam, the confluence of the Bhima and the Amarja, were cleared.

Over 500 such structures were cleared during the three-day drive.

Official sources told The Hindu on Saturday that the “operation cleanup” was overdue in the temple town. It was taken up following directions from the Chief Minister’s office, they said.

A large number of shops that had come up illegally had narrowed the roads leading to the main temple and the sangam ghat, the sources said, and added that such illegal structures had been cleared.

The authorities now plan to take up widening and concreting of the roads leading to the temple and create facilities such as rest houses, restaurants, drinking water facility and toilets.

The road leading to the ghat will also be widened. It is traditional for pilgrims coming to the town to take a dip at the sangam and pay obeisance at Audambar Vruksha and Datta temple near the ghat. The steps leading to the ghat will also be strengthened.

Action

The authorities are also planning to take action against those fleecing pilgrims in and outside the temple. They also want to ensure that offerings made by devotees were used for development of the temple and improving facilities for pilgrims.
