KOZHIKODE: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has condemned agitations for land for the landless tribal people being waged by the CPI(M) in Wayanad and said that CPI(M)’s attempts to defend these agitations have to be seen as a confession of the LDF government’s failure to evict encroachers through lawful means. Mr. Chandy was speaking to presspersons after inaugurating the School Day celebrations at Dr. Ayyathan Gopalam Memorial High School here on Saturday. Mr. Chandy said it was in front of the residence of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan that agitations for land should be staged by CPI (M) cadres and not in distant Wayanad since it was the LDF government which was responsible for the delay in distributing land among landless tribal people. Encroachers should be evicted by invoking provisions of the law and not by allowing agitators to seize land by force, he said. Mr. Chandy also dismissed as baseless the allegation that UDF convener P.P. Thankachan had encroached large tracts of land in Idukki district.
