Load shedding was to maintain grid security

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) on Saturday clarified that it had to resort to load shedding of 10 to 20 minutes in the last two days throughout the State for maintaining grid security on the advice of the Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre, Bangalore.
The Board was making efforts to maintain uninterrupted power supply and hopeful that the problem of power shortage would be “resolved shortly,” an official release stated, assuring the public, particularly students.
On Tuesday (February 23), the instantaneous peak demand recorded an all-time high of 10,160 MW, five per cent more than what was in January.
Energy demands of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh also rose. Consequently, power availability through the exchange had come down.
