PATHANAMTHITTA: With National stars Tiji Raju, Aswani S. Kumar and P.J. Jomol in its ranks, the Kerala State Electricity Board retained the women's title without much fuss in the 15th Kerala State inter-club volleyball championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Sunday night.

KSEB, from Thiruvananthapuram, defeated Pala's Alphonsa College 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 in just 50 minutes to win the title.

“We have always been the champion in this event, this is our 15th title,” said the team's deputy coach Jaisamma Moothedan, a former international.

Alphonsa, with many sparkling stars who had played for Mahatma Gandhi University – the National varsities championship's silver medallist — in its ranks, began with much promise and even took a 6-3 lead at the start but once the KSEB levelled the scores at eight, the Thiruvananthapuram side went from strength to strength.

Aswani was at the forefront of the attack, her smashes were well directed, easily evading the rival blockers while captain Tiji combined well with M.K. Prajisha and M.J. Alphonsa in erecting a strong block for the Alphonsa spikers.

The KSEB setter Jomol Kurien, despite being a bit slow in her movements, compensated well with her serves. She brought five direct points with her serve in the second set.
