PREVENTION: A resident of Gandhi Nagar in Pudukottai taking DEC tablets in the presence of Collector A. Suganthi on Sunday. PUDUKOTTAI: Collector A. Suganthi on Sunday launched the lymphatic filariasis control programme for this year by distributing the Di-ethyl carbamazine citrate (DEC) and Albendazole tablets to a cross section of residents in the town. Explaining its importance, the Collector said that this was the tenth year in succession that the special drive was being launched in the district – one of the endemic zones for filariasis. She appealed to the people to take the tablets without fail. To motivate the masses, the Collector took the tablets on the occasion. Accompanied by Ramathilgam Udaiyappan, Municipal chairperson and S. Ezhilarasan, Joint Director of Health Services, the Collector went to Gandhi Nagar and Sathyamurthy Colony in the Cauvery Nagar area near here and distributed the tablets. In a press release issued later, the Collector said that special drive would be launched for three days from March 1 to supply the tablets to those who did not get it today. About 13.65 persons would benefit under the programme in the district. PerambalurIn Perambalur, Collector M. Vijyakumar inaugurated the programme by distributing the tablets to a cross section of residents here. The Collector said that a total of 4.55 lakh persons would be covered under the programme in the district. As many as 2,141 health-workers and volunteers of service organisations distributed the tablets to the people. M. Rajkumar, MLA, M.N. Raja, Municipal Chairman and S. Pazhanisamy, District Revenue Officer, accompanied the Collector. Special door-to-door survey would be conducted for two days from Monday to distribute the tablets to those who were left out on Sunday, the Collector added. TiruvarurTablets were given to people in a door to door exercise in the district on Sunday. M. Chandrasekaran, Collector, went to every house in Thirukaravasal panchayat and distributed the tablets. According to the Collector, the tablets were distributed to 10,65,890 people in the district by 5,060 employees on Sunday. Those left out will be covered on Monday and Tuesday. John Louis, District Revenue Officer and Sahaya Mary Reeta, Joint Director of Health accompanied the Collector. ThanjavurTablets were given to nearly 20 lakh people in the district on Sunday. Nearly 9,580 staff took part in the exercise. People left out will be covered on Monday and Tuesday.
