‘Police IT’ in Gulbarga, Belgaum and Chitradurga

Special Correspondent

Software for the pilot scheme has been developed by Wipro

The pilot scheme will be extended to other districts later

Three modules being introduced under ‘Police IT’

GULBARGA: The Home Department has decided make its offices and police stations “paperless” on a pilot basis in Gulbarga, Belgaum and Chitradurga districts this year.

“Police IT”, the pilot scheme, is being introduced with the help of the software developed by Wipro. Based on the success of the scheme, it will be extended to other districts in phases.

Superintendent of Police B.A. Padmanayan told The Hindu on Sunday that “Police IT” had the potential of introducing 11 modules which would help bring all the wings of the department under its network. Initially, three modules to cover wireless, arms and ammunitions, and financial and administrative wings were being introduced.

He said that 39 police stations would be brought under the “Police IT” network.

The fourth module to monitor the movement of foreigners was also being introduced in Gulbarga district, he said.

Details of foreigners arriving in the district, who had to compulsorily register their names at the office of the Superintendent of Police, would be recorded in the module, he said.

After the introduction of “Police IT” in the district, every detail pertaining to registration of a case, first information report, case dairy, detention, progress of investigation and charge-sheet would have to be entered in the network, which could be accessed by senior officials not only in the district, but also in the State headquarters.

Such details would be produced in court at the time of hearing of the case through printouts, he said.

Mr. Padmanayan said “Police IT” would reduce the burden of administrative work and preparation of bills in offices. It would also ensure transparency and accountability at the station and administrative levels.

Mr. Padmanayan said all police stations, except three, in the district had been brought under Virtual Private Network (VPN) which enabled transfer of data related to cases registered in police stations to the office of the Superintendent of Police immediately.

These details could be accessed by the State data centres of the Police Department in Bangalore and Davangere. The police stations at Mahagoan, Konchavaram and Madbol in the district could not be brought under VPN owing to some technical reasons, he added.
