Water management through public-private partnership

Special Correspondent

Priority to rainwater harvesting in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government will take up management of water resources through public-private partnership following the new water policy announced in the State recently. The State Water Resources Department also intends to accord the highest priority to rainwater harvesting.

Announcing this at a workshop on integrated water resource management here over the weekend, State Principal Water Resources Secretary Ram Lubhaya said the public-private partnership model would be extended to the revival of traditional water sources, ground water management and improving the availability of water in the rural areas.

Mr. Lubhaya said the State Government would develop water resources in future by treating the sources of water as “static” and added that this status would be achieved through active participation of all stakeholders and their sensitisation to environmental issues.

The integrated water management project in the State has been sponsored by the European Union. Mr. Lubhaya said the Panchayati Raj institutions would also be involved in the works such as supply of clean drinking water, ground water recharge and conservation of surface water.

New policy

According to an official release here, European Union’s deputy team leader Srinivas Madhukaran provided details of the public-private partnership envisaged in the State following the adoption of the new water policy.
