Trust chips in to help kidney patients

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Fate dealt a cruel blow to Prem Eliot, an MCA graduate, in the garb of diabetes. Despite his deprived economic and social status, he excelled in studies, and started working as a lecturer in a private college when he was diagnosed with failure of both kidneys.

He had to quit his job and undergo dialysis. His mother Suguna had to return as the daily wage labourer to bear the cost of his treatment—Rs.1,200 per each sitting of dialysis. She even had to sell four acres of land at Aleru, Nalgonda, for her son’s treatment.

M. Manjula, mother of two kids, too has similar experience. All of 33 years, she lost her kidneys to a bout of high blood pressure and has since been dependent on dialysis. Her husband, a security guard, has little means to support the expensive treatment.

Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation Trust, started five months ago, came to the aid of these two, and 135 others, by offering a subsidy on dialysis at select hospitals. Poor patients covered by the Trust can avail of the treatment at Rs.300 per sitting, thereby reducing expenditure to a great extent.

To obtain the identity card, new patients will have to produce their electricity bill as proof of their economic status. ‘Jagriti—2010’, an event to create awareness about dialysis, will be organised by the trust on March 14 at 6 p.m. at Lalitha Kala Thoranam, Nampally. Entry is free. It will feature singers Roop Kumar Rathod and Deepak Bhai Shah. For details, contact 24742896 or 24743445.
