Fingerprints database helps nab murder accused

Staff Reporter

Victim’s body was found near a pond in Madhapur

HYDERABAD: Fingerprints database helped the Cyberabad police identify a murder victim and nab the accused who turned out to be the victim’s friend.

The body of a 29-year-old man, identified as K. Swami, was found lying near a pond at Pallavi Enclave in Guttala Begumpet of Madhapur on January 5.

As the killers defaced the victim by smashing his head with a boulder, his identity could not be established, Madhapur Inspector, B. Sreenivasa Reddy, said.

No leads could be found at the crime scene to identify the victim even after investigators combed nook and corner of the area.

Wondering if it would remain an undetected case, the investigators then collected the victim’s fingerprints and sent them to the Cyberabad Fingerprints Bureau to find if they matched with any of those available.

Rigor mortis

Police found it difficult to collect the victim’s fingerprints as rigor mortis had set in the body by then.

They had to forcibly open the fists, collect the prints on pieces of paper for each finger and sent them jointly on a single sheet for verification.

The crucial clue came after the fingerprints matched with that of Swami who was earlier detained by Madhapur police under section 109 of Criminal Procedure Code.

“Swami is believed to have been involved in some petty offences,” the Madhapur Inspector said.

Subsequent probe revealed that he was a mason living at Navabharatnagar and was last seen with Yellappa, 28, a labourer, of the same locality.

Confession

During interrogation, Yellappa admitted to having murdered Swami alleging that the latter had cast eyes on his concubine.
