Belgaum: In a case of elephant-poaching in the Dandeli forests forming part of the elephant corridor of the Western Ghats, the Chikkodi police on Sunday arrested four persons and seized two tusks. As per preliminary estimates, the value of the tusks has been put at Rs. 60 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the accused near a roadside dhaba on Chikkodi-Ankli Road. The police seized the tusks concealed in a gunny bag and arrested Arif Peersaab Sangoli (36), Piraz Balu Raut (32), Salim Mehboob Pathan (33) and Sadanand Jyotiba Manikar (32). The police also arrested four more persons identified as Wilson Louis D’Souza (29), Govind Shantaram Sutar (34), Mahadev Khanderao Ghatage (40) and Yashwant Chudappa Tambolkar (55), all from Khanapur taluk, who allegedly handed over the illegal consignment to Arif and his accomplices. The tusks were brought from Dandeli. The police have taken up investigation.
