KOLKATA: Expressing regret over Sunday’s campus clashes, which put a damper on Basanta Utsav (Spring Festival) festivities, authorities of Visva-Bharati at Santiniketan have announced measures to beef up security and set up a committee to probe the incidents. The security measures include additional police patrolling, increase in the number of guards, from the private agency that provides security, and installation of drop gates near the women’s hostel complex, university spokesperson Amitava Chowdhury. The clashes, in the early hours of Sunday between two groups resulted in serious injuries to some students and severe damage to artworks at “Black House,” one of the hostels. Murals made under the direction of artist Nandalal Bose were disfigured. In protest, a section of students boycotted all functions and celebrations related to Basanta Utsav. Mr. Chowdhury said the inquiry committee would also probe the conduct of the protesting students some of them might have coerced others into joining the boycott. ‘Atmosphere affected’“The atmosphere of security and harmony of the university has been affected,” he said.
