Thiruvananthapuram: Road accidents claim an average of 3,817 lives every year in Kerala and leave 44,519 persons injured, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told the Assembly on Tuesday. Answering a question by P. Thilothaman, he said 3,779 deaths and 48,246 injuries had been reported in road accidents in the year 2007. The figures were 3,901 deaths and 43,857 in the year 2008 while it was 3,773 deaths and 41,455 injured in 2009. As many as 2,675 cases of chain snatching have been reported in Kerala during the tenure of this government, he informed the House during question hour. The Minister said the total loss suffered by the victims was estimated to be Rs.6.7 crore. As many as 1,114 chains had been recovered by the police and returned to the victims, he said. Answering a question by K.T. Jaleel, Mr. Balakrishnan said 124 goondas had been jailed in Kerala, while 72 were yet to be apprehended. He said no goonda list had been prepared in the State. But goondas were being monitored by the police, he said. The Minister said that 26 police stations had been attacked during the term of the LDF government. He told N. Sakthan that 325 criminals sentenced for murder had been released from jail during the term. While 18 had been imprisoned for political murders, 39 were clamped in jail for killing women, he said. Mr. Balakrishnan said moves were on to revise the Police Act. Efforts were on to link the police stations in Kerala with those across the country under the Crime and Criminal Tracking and Networking scheme. He informed K.K. Sailaja that the police force was being equipped for disaster management.
