KOLKATA: Pune FC started its second phase campaign of the I-League on a bright note beating host East Bengal 2-1 in a 14th round encounter here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday. After a barren first half, the Pune team took the lead in the first minute of the second session when its Ivory Coast striker Douhou Pierre found the mark off an assist from Brazilian Edmar Figueira. Having missed a few close chances in the first session, the home side struggled to contain a rejuvenated visitor after the change of ends. Edmar Figuera took the match away from the host doubling the scoreline off a fine solo effort in the 54th minute. East Bengal managed to pull one back though a 75th minute penalty that was scored by Abel Hammond. But East Bengal's hopes of an equaliser vanished when its star striker Baichung Bhutia collected his second booking of the match and was marched off in the 77th minute. The win helped Pune FC tally 22 points from 14 matches while East Bengal remained on 20 points after 14 outings. — Principal Correspondent
