Speaker vents ire on TDP members

Special Correspondent

‘What is this nonsense? You have failed as a responsible Opposition'

HYDERABAD: Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy lost his cool at TDP members in the Assembly on Wednesday as they surged towards the podium during a debate over the issue of water allocation to Brahmani Steels.

Soon after the House re-assembled after a75-minute break following an adjournment amid disorderly scenes, Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu demanded scrapping of GO No 84 through which water allocation was made to the company from Mylavaram reservoir instead of to the 840-MW capacity Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project (RTPP) at Muddanur.

Shouts at members

Tempers ran high when Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy remarked that the TDP, when in power, did not take up a single irrigation project or industry in Kadapa area. Stung by this, TDP members moved to the podium.

Hardly concealing his anger, the Speaker shouted at them “what is this nonsense? You have no business to come here. Go back. You have failed as a responsible Opposition”.

Finding them unyielding, he continued: “You are not cooperating. There are many people's issues which require our attention. You are trying to hijack the agenda of the House.”

He adjourned the House for the day but the TDP members staged a dharna in the well for sometime before leaving the House.
