RAMANATHAPURAM: More than 2000 members owing allegiance to the CITU and AITUC were arrested in different parts of Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts on Friday.

They were protesting against spiralling prices of essential commodities. They accused that the Central government had failed to control the prices of essential commodities causing difficulties for common people particularly poor and middle class. Instead of taking steps to control the prices, the United Progressive Alliance Government chose to increase the prices of fuel.

In Ramanathapuram district, as many as 1690 persons including 489 women were taken into custody. They picketed road traffic at 8 places including Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram, Paramakudi and Thiruvadanai.

Sivaganga

In Sivaganga district, 483 persons were arrested when they were trying to stage road roko in Karaikudi, Sivaganga and Devakottai. The police said they were taken into preventive custody.
