Naveen to focus on anti-poverty programmes

Completes 10 years in office as Chief Minister of Orissa

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who completed 10 years in office on the occasion of his father Biju Patnaik's 94 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary on Friday, said that he would continue to strive hard to solve the problems facing the poor in the State.

Mr. Patnaik told presspersons that his government would give priority to anti-poverty programmes in the coming days.

The socialite-turned-politician, who has silenced his opponents and handled the opposition with comparative ease in the past, had a hectic day attending a series of programmes that were organised by various government departments to observe Biju Patnaik's birth anniversary as the Panchayati Raj Day.

The day began with Mr. Patnaik paying floral tributes at the statue of Biju Patnaik at Forest Park and flagging off a mini marathon from outside the park.

The mini marathon was organised by the Sports and Youth Services Department of his government.

He also attended a meeting organised at the Biju Janata Dal headquarters to pay tributes to the memory of Biju Patnaik. In the afternoon, the Chief Minister addressed a meeting organised at the Kalinga Satdium here to mark the State-level Panchayati Raj Day celebrations.

Members of several Panchayati Raj institutions were felicitated by Mr. Patnaik on the occasion for the commendable work they had done during the year 2007-08 and 2008-09.

A number of Ministers and senior leaders of the BJD attended the meeting that was organised by the Panchayati Raj Department.
