For a better deal: Members of various trade unions staging a road blockade in Coimbatore on Friday urging the Central Government to control the prices of essential commodities. Tirupur: As many as 3,219 trade unionists were arrested in various parts of the district on Friday after they organised a road blockade to press their demand for better social security for industrial workers. The agitation was observed jointly by national-level trade unions like CITU, AITUC, HMS, BMS and INTUC. The trade unions demanded that both the Central and State governments should ensure job security of the industrial workers while extending financial assistance to different sectors to help them overcome any recessional trend or financial turmoil. “This is essential considering the tendency shown by industrial units of retrenching large number of workers even after accepting the sops on the pretext of making their financial position secure,” the agitators alleged. They also wanted the government to make certain that welfare assistance packages meant for unorganized sector workers were extended without demarcating the workers into categories based on their income levels. The other demands raised include measures to control price inflation and dropping of the proposals to set off the fiscal deficits in the budgets by selling the shares of public sector undertakings. The prominent persons who courted arrest include Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy, CITU district president K. Unnikrishnan, former MP K. Subbarayan and ATIUC district president Palanisamy. The agitations were held in Tirupur city, Uthukuli, Avinashi, Palladam, Dharapuram, Kangayam and Udumalpet.
