A campaign to save environment

CHENNAI: The sands of the Elliots Beach are witnessing a bevy of activities, green as a few organisers would like to put it.

From cleaning the beach stretch of litter to creating a mound in the shape of an elephant with the collected waste to distributing jute bags in exchange for plastic carry bags, it is all about saving the environment.

The activities on Saturday evening, organised as part of the nationwide NDTV-Toyota Environment Campaign, made visitors to the beach to think of options for keeping the surroundings green and being sensitive to the environment. The second edition of the two-day campaign ‘Greenathon' is being put together by Exnora International.

M.Suman, a Class VII student of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, was the cynosure of most eyes. He created different sounds from his eco-friendly drum set.

This was made possible by assembling six canvas cans, four paint buckets, oil barrels, water cans, huge drums in which water is stored – all empty and of different sizes to get the rhythm.

“It is comparatively difficult to drum and generate the musical sound with these cans but then it was fun gathering all thing used containers from my home,” said Suman, who would perform on Sunday too.

A stone's throw away were students of Shree Niketan Matriculation School getting ready with their formation of ‘Greenathon'. Around 250 students lit solar lamps after sunset to drive home the energy efficiency of these lamps.

Adding music to the whole ambience was the performance by Artseek Drum Circle. The Greenathon campaign promises to get better on Sunday with another set of events starting from the morning. It includes students and college volunteers cleaning the beach, creating a sand sculpture and a magic show. Saplings would also be distributed to beach goers.

Member of Parliament Kanimozhi, actor Parthiban, director Vasanth, Exnora International founder M.B. Nirmal participated in the event.
