NPC to augment Kaiga plant's capacity

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Additional Chief Secretary K. Jairaj on Saturday said the Nuclear Power Corporation will augment the generation capacity at Kaiga Nuclear Power Station, near Karwar, by 1,400 MW. However, the process will take five to seven years.

Speaking on the power scenario in Karnataka at the Indian Institute of Public Administration here, Mr. Jairaj said the Atomic Energy Commission had sought a Greenfield site to set up a new nuclear power plant in the coastal belt. However, it was difficult to offer such a site in the coastal belt, he added.

The power crisis is likely to ease to a considerable extent by 2013-2014 when the State will be able to add 6,000 MW more to the installed capacity of 7,000 MW, Mr. Jairaj said.

This will have to be achieved through several new projects proposed by the public sector undertakings, effective distribution, containing power theft and other reformatory measures, he added.
