“Women have achieved their rights”

THANJAVUR: Women have achieved their rights after a long struggle said S.P. Muthuraman, film director here on Monday. Speaking at the World Women's Day celebration organised by Bharath Women's Association at Bharath College of Science and Management, Muthuraman traced the history and said that it was in 1857, seeds for women's rights was sowed in New York when women working in textile sector launched an agitation. Again in March, 1908, 15,000 women participated in a demonstration demanding equal rights for them. This day is celebrated as World Women's Day. Male chauvinism remained high in India in olden days. It has now changed. Women have property rights now. After thirteen years of struggle, now the bill for providing 33 per cent reservation to women is to be introduced in Parliament on Monday. All parties including DMK and AIADMK have supported the bill.

The director purchased soaps made by women self- help groups at the meeting. Punitha Ganesan, secretary of the college, Radhika Michael, Blood bank officer of Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital, Balasundaram,Chairman of the college, and others participated in the function.
