This Day That Age
Srimathi Rukmini Devi's services for the resuscitation of classical dance and fine arts were acknowledged by various speakers at a function held on March 10 at the Kalakshetra, Adyar, to celebrate her 56th birthday. Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar who presided, observed that he regarded Srimathi Rukmini Devi as a crusader. Among the causes which she had crusaded was Bharata Natya. At a time when dancing was considered as not befitting a person of her position and status, she took to dancing and contributed her share for its resuscitation and sublimation. To-day, the Kalakshetra was not only an example but an exemplar of the right type of artistic impulse, manifesting itself in the right type of artistic expression.
