Thrissur: Various programmes will be held here on March 20 by the Arnos Padre Academy to commemorate the 278th death anniversary of grammarian, lexicographer and philologist Arnos Padre (Johann Ernst Hanxleden).

Padre was proficient in German, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Latin, Syriac, Portuguese and Tamil. He built a church at Velur near Thrissur in 1712 and spent most of his remaining days there.

Kerala Sahitya Akademi former secretary P.V. Krishnan Nair will inaugurate a seminar on ‘Arnos Padre's contribution to social renaissance in Kerala' to be held at the St. Thomas College on March 20 at 2 p.m.

Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhathu will inaugurate a public meeting at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi open-air theatre. Janata Dal leader M.P. Veerendra Kumar and historian M.G.S. Narayanan are expected to speak.

A choreography based on Arnos Padre's Malayalam poem, ‘Puthenpana', will be presented. One of the earliest Malayalam poems based on Christian themes ‘Puthenpana' has been to Christian households what Ezhuthachan's ‘Adhyatma Ramayanam' is to Hindus. There are 14 ‘padams'. But for the 12th ‘padam' written in the metre, Nathonatha, the rest of the couplets are written in the metre, Sarpini.

Born at Ostercappeln near Osnabrück in Hanover, Germany, in 1681, Hanxleden arrived in India on December 13, 1700, as a Jesuit missionary. Along with his superiors Wilhelm Weber and Wilhelm Meyr and a barber Franz Kaspar Schillinger, Haxleden travelled through Italy, Turkey, Syria, Armenia and Persia, and reached Surat. Weber and Meyer died at sea.

Theologian and writer A. Adappur on Tuesday told reporters that the Catholic Church at Velur and Arnos Padre's residence nearby should be protected as historical monuments.
