Udhagamandalam: The restoration works on the landslide-hit Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) have entered the final phase, according to a Southern Railway press release issued here on Wednesday. It pointed out that one bridge (Number 63) remains to be rebuilt and it will require about 25 days. If the work is completed as scheduled and all the other works like laying of signal and electrical cables are attended to the service may resume before the targeted date of May 15. After the restoration of train traffic between Coonoor and Udagamandalam on January 5, the restoration work on the 27 km long Mettupalayam – Coonoor section has been progressing in full swing. Out of three bridges which had to be rebuilt in the Mettupalayam - Coonoor rack section, Bridge No.74 between Hillgrove and Coonoor has been completely rebuilt. Bridge no.66, at Km 18/7-8, has also been completely rebuilt. Bridge No.63, between Hillgrove and Runneymede, which was temporarily strengthened using steel cribs, and used for some time to ferry materials on the ballast train, has been dismantled so that a new bridge can be built at an approximate height of 8 metres.
