THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cash awards worth a little over Rs. 1.20 crore will be presented to 800 sportspersons of the State who excelled in international and National competitions during 2007-08 at a public function to be held at the Mananchira square, Kozhikode on Saturday. KSSC president T.P. Dasan said that the special awards of Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh to cricketers S. Sreesanth and Robin Uthappa, announced by the State Government sometime back, will also be presented. WIth the cricketers busy with the IPL, the same would be collected by family members. The cash awards are for sportspersons who represented the State in the sub-junior, junior and senior sections and won medals in their respective National championships and for those who represented the country in international competitions. Among those will received awards of Rs. 1 lakh or above include athletes Preeja Sreedharan (Rs. 3.40 lakh), Mayookha Johnny (Rs.2.75 lakh), Jithin Paul (Rs.2.55 lakh), Renjith Maheswary (Rs. 2.27 lakh), C.T. Raji (Rs.2.10 lakh), Shijil Varghese (Rs.1.37 lakh) and Bibu Mathew (Rs. 1lakh), shooter P.T. Reghunath (Rs.3.25 lakh), cyclists Mahitha Mohan (Rs.1.95 lakh) and V. Rejini (Rs.1.86 lakh) and rowers Julie Varghese (Rs.1.83 lakh) and P.R. Raji (Rs.1.37 lakh). The function to be presided by the Kozhikode Mayor, M. Bhaskaran, will be inaugurated by the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar. Besides, the function will also be attended by Forest Minister, Benoy Viswam, the Industries Minister, Elamaram Kareem, track queen P.T. Usha, MPs, MLAs, senior Government and sports officials. Dasan also announced that steps were being taken to initiate school children into swimming during the coming summer vacations. As part of the project, at least four training centres will function in each of the 14 districts in the State. The project was being jointly implemented by the KSSC and its district affiliates, District Panchayats and the Kerala Aquatic Association. Efforts are also on to implement the ‘Go for Gold' scheme in athletics based on the project report prepared and submitted to the Government by Olympian Suresh Babu. Dasan also released a table of achievements of trainees by the 17 centralised sports hostels, 28 college sports hostels and 13 school sports hostels being run by the KSSC and said the performances of the trainees during the last year has shown considerable improvement over the previous year. — Special Correspondent
