Forces' shortage was one reason

“Greyhounds told to maintain restraint

New Delhi:The Andhra Pradesh government, in the Supreme Court, justified the deployment of Greyhounds, the anti-naxal force, at Osmania University and said this was done at the instance of the Commissioner of Police on instructions from the State DGP.

In its affidavit filed in response to the court directions as to why Greyhounds was deployed on the university campus, the State said “Andhra Pradesh has been experiencing disturbances from November 2009”. In December, 2009, the State forces were overstretched and the situation came to such a pass where even the administrative platoons of the A.P. Special Police had to be deployed due to the shortage of forces.

Hearing today

The case will come up for hearing on Friday before a Bench headed by Justice Singhvi when this affidavit will come under scrutiny.

The State said “even the campus security of A.P. Special Police battalions stood compromised since adequate number of policemen were not left at the battalion headquarters. In view of the paucity of forces arising out of continuous deployment of the available forces, the State government had approached the Central government for deployment of additional paramilitary forces and also forces from other States.”

“At this stage, the Greyhounds also had to be deployed so as to supplement the already deployed forces to maintain law and order.

The deployment was done on a requisition by the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad and on the instructions of the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh.”

As per the details furnished by the government, a total of 20 battalions of Greyhounds were deployed between December 24, 2009 and January 7; January 20 and February 2; February 12 and 16.
