Uneasy calm at Orkatteri, Onchiyam

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: An uneasy calm prevailed in the rural areas of the district on Saturday following an outbreak of violence at Orkatteri and Onchiyam in the past two days. Vadakara Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Gupta said the situation was under control.

Twelve pickets had been temporarily set up in the limits of Chombal and Edachery police station. In a related development, the police on Saturday recovered six swords from the bushes on the roadside in the limits of Chombal police station. Preliminary examination revealed that the weapons were not newly manufactured. A case had been registered.

Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) branch secretary M.P. Damodaran was attacked with bombs at Orkatteri on Thursday. Unidentified persons attacked Revolutionary Democratic Youth Federation of India (RDYFI) Onchiyam block president K.K. Jayan with swords at Thuruthimukku Kadavu on Friday.

The RMP is a parallel outfit formed by dissidents of the CPI(M) at Onchiyam and Eramala. Clashes had occurred between the two groups on several occasions. The latest incidents were a continuation of the clashes that had occurred a month back following the destruction of a martyr's column of the CPI(M). The assailants arrived in a ferry to carry out the attack on Jayan who was at Thiruthimukku waterfront. The attackers allegedly escaped in the same ferry. Jayan suffered serious injuries. He was admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

Damodaran was attacked by a group of persons, who arrived in a jeep. They threw a crude explosive at him and fled in the jeep soon after the incident.
