Be sincere about Muslim quota: Gafoor

Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: Former MLA M.A..Gafoor urged the government to be sincere about implementing the quota for Muslims in jobs and educational institutions rather than using it as a political and election tool.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday on behalf of AWAZ, a non-political outfit, Mr. Gafoor said the present law would be suffice to implement the quota but only sincerity was lacking. Andhra Pradesh was not the first State in the country to attempt to implement the quota for Muslims. Kerala was enforcing 12 p.c. quota for minorities, Karnataka 4 p.c. and Tamil Nadu 3.5 per cent.

In case of Tamil Naidu, the total quota reserved for various disadvantaged sections crossed 69 per cent, much above the Supreme Court stipulation of 50 per cent. The AWAZ planned a rally on Sunday to highlight the issues of minorities here inviting leaders of all parties. TDP leader Y. Ramakrishna, Aziz Pasha (CPI), Mohammad Salim (CPI-M), Feroz Khan (Praja Rajyam) will attend.
