Meet discusses capacity addition to fisheries

VISAKHAPATNAM: Ways and means of capacity building to enhance competitiveness of Indian fisheries and registration of organic products abroad are under discussion at the five-day national level training programme now under progress at the Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical & Engineering Training Unit (CIFNET) here.

The programme being conducted by the National Federation of Fishermen's Cooperative Ltd., New Delhi, is of utmost significance as it will help evolve strategies to improve the fisheries sector.

The federation, under the administrative control of Ministry of Agriculture is a national level federation of fishermen/fisheries cooperatives in the country dedicated to the socio-economic development of around 25 lakh members belonging to 19,000 fisheries cooperatives.

Participants chosen from the College of Fisheries, Andhra University, State Fisheries Department, State Fisheries Cooperative Federations, Institute of Cooperative Management, CIFNET, Fisheries Survey of India and other institutes are taking part in the trainers' training programme, which was inaugurated on Thursday. In his inaugural address, president of Seafood Exporters' Association of India Padmanabhan emphasised the need for utilisation of abundantly available catch of tuna fish and use of modern fishing vessels. Zonal Director of FSI S.K. Naik stressed the importance of hygiene and sanitation in fish markets, vessels, fishing harbours and at the time of handling fish.

Senior Scientist of CIFT G. Rajeswari, MPEDA Deputy Director Vijay Kumar, CIFNET Deputy Director A.K. Choudhary and others spoke on importance of capacity development.
