Plea to change name of Communal Violence Bill

Detailed memorandum containing 12 suggestions has been forwarded to Home Minister

Hyderabad: The Citizens Initiative on the Communal Violence Bill has suggested changing the nomenclature of the Bill as “Sectarian and Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill, 2005. This is essential to widen the ambit of the Act to include violence against any minority/marginalised group.

The Citizens Initiative has come up with various suggestions after a round table conference organised by the Movement for Peace and Justice (MPJ) here with eminent lawyers, intellectuals, social workers and others.

MPJ president, Hamid Mohammed Khan, told presspersons here on Saturday that though the Bill was placed before the Rajya Sabha it was not passed on account of various shortcomings in it. As per legal experts there were 113 places where amendments were required otherwise the police and administration would play havoc with the common man, especially religious minorities.

“The Bill should be placed before the Parliament only after proper and appropriate amendments are made”, said Mr. Khan.

He said a detailed memorandum containing 12 suggestions have been forwarded to the Home Minister, P. Chidambaram.
